The Harvard Classics: A Free, Digital Collection

I like magnificent book collections like the Great Books series and this inimitable set from Harvard. They’re good on the bookshelf, not just because they look handsome, but because they remind me of how little I know–and likely ever will know. I find that reassuring. Who wants to know everything? Can’t imagine anything duller.

But I’d wager that a person who read, say half of them, would be much better prepared for the 21st century–or the 22nd, for that matter–than the person who spent a lifetime acquiring so-called 21st Century skills that have contemporary education so exercised. These stories and the lessons in them are timeless. Can’t say that for the 21st Century.
