Update: A student’s take on note-taking with Twitter

My students and I are experimenting with using Twitter as a note-taking tool and ways to evaluate its worth as such. This comment from one of my students is especially encouraging:

Ideally, education should incorporate both the width of the Internet and the depth of books. In our Theory of Knowledge class, we are currently experimenting with Twitter note-taking. While listening to a recorded lecture, students can ‘tweet’ concise messages highlighting a particularly interesting point or quote. Each tweet imparts depth of insight while our collective tweets provide breadth. ‘Groupthink’ activities are often criticized for inhibiting individual thought since people are inclined to minimize conflict by unanimous agreement. I believe that group discussion is not a melting pot of ideas but a forge from which new ideas can be shaped.

    Wow! Saw your post on Gordon Lockhart’s blog http://gbl55.wordpress.com/2012/11/12/designing-a-comment-scraper-for-moocs-and-other-animals/ and I’ve not seen anything so exciting since my first MOOC way back when.

    I’m sharing with my grad students who are or will soon be English teachers and for the most part are finding it really difficult to embrace Twitter for professional use, let alone teach with it. Right, ECI 521?

    I will say to your grad students that Twitter is the single most important professional development tool I have. And, as you gathered from the blog posts here, I think it has equal potential for my high school students. We’d be happy to talk to your group!
