Email is not a communication tool.

The first truth to tell about e-mail is that it facilitates lazy and thoughtless communication.

A little less than a year ago, I pledged to cut back internal emailas far as possible. That was mostly successful, though I found that if I relax at all, the messages mount quickly. So, just in time, I read this piece in Forbes, I Banned All Internal E-Mails at My Company for a Week, which fortified and renewed my efforts to eliminate email.

The takeaway:

  1. email is not a communication tool
  2. email facilitates lazy and thoughtless communciation (see my post, The Perfect Communications App)
  3. limiting email helps us make choices
  4. the volume of email and productivity are inversely proportional
